When I try to visualize patience, part of what comes to mind are portraits of people from history or the bible. A good example of patience in the bible? Abraham.
The poor guy had to wait ONE HUNDRED YEARS until what God promised him even started. An entire century of waiting until he & Sarah were given a child. And along the way, he messed it up royally because he couldn’t continue patience. He moved his eyes from Heaven to Earth, where he then compared his situation to others. Instead of waiting in the promise of the Lord, he turned to his humanity and had a child by another woman.
No thanks, said God, keep waiting. So Abraham, after apologizing profusely for the oversight, continued to wait.
Hebrews 6:15 concludes the story by saying, “And so, after he had patiently endured, he obtained the promise.”
Endured is the key word. Patience is not a journey for the faint hearted or timid. Patience is not always a gift or a blessing. Patience very often barely wins out over impatience or ingratitude. But if you endure, you get to see the other side.
